AMERICAN FOLK ARTIST CHERYL BARTLEY "Folk Art for the Spirit"
ARTIST BIO
American Folk Art Painter, Cheryl Bartley’s artistic talent was apparent from an early age when she produced her first works of art as a means of communication. Raised by a French speaking family, she relied on a paintbrush and a box of paint to express herself to her English speaking friends.
Cheryl's early love of expressing herself with her art resulted in working for over 25 years as a graphic artist in the manufacture of wallpaper and textiles. During these years, Cheryl developed the skills necessary to understand the technical aspects in the creation of wallpaper and textile design, color theory, computer design, market trends, and the proper care and utilization of quality artist materials.
Although trained as a graphic artist, Cheryl now unleashes her imagination and creativity from her “Folk Art Spirit” studio. The inspiration for her life long fascination with telling stories with paint is revealed in her folk art spirited creations. Each painting will enchant you with its detailed happy scenes of simpler times. She utilizes mixtures of vibrant colors to produce scenes from her imagination and actual places that are warm and inviting, vibrant and exciting. Her preferred medium is acrylic on canvas or wood, and watercolor on paper.
Her folk art collection can be seen at her gallery in Winchester Connecticut. Her paintings and prints are found in private collections and businesses worldwide. Cheryl's folk art images hold worldwide appeal and are licensed to manufacturers of puzzles, greeting cards and calenders worldwide.
Early Years
In a pleasant little town in rural Connecticut, a baby was born to an eccentric French artistic family. The little girl was raised on bread, sugar, bananas and lots of butter. Being raised by a French speaking family the little baby girl could only speak French when she began to talk. Before she could utter her very first English words, she had learned to carry a paintbrush and paint box which she often used to express herself to her English speaking friends. That baby was me.
Education
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a portfolio in fine arts from Saint Joseph College for Women in West Hartford Connecticut. My well rounded liberal arts education includes classes in art therapy/ studio art techniques, philosophy, women artist, art history, and public speaking to name a few. I also hold a certification in off shore sailing. I have sailed across the Gulf Stream, around the Bahaman Islands, Florida to Puerto Rico, and the Dominican. This experience has helped me develop my own style of painting ocean village scenes with a primitive offshore perspective. I have 25 years of expertise working as a graphic artist in textile and wallpaper manufacturing. During those years I learned the technical aspects of a design, color theory, computer design, market trends, and the proper care and utilization of quality artist materials. This knowledge has helped me to create works of art that are both made with superior quality and expert craftsmanship.
Today
I live in New England (Highland Lake, Winsted, Connecticut) with my husband. We love to work together in our gardens and sail on our 16-foot Sunbird sailboat on Highland Lake. We also enjoy kayaking, bicycling around Highland Lake and climbing Bear Mountain in Salisbury Connecticut. My husband name is Russell Buchner and he is a quality improvement consultant. Russell is also an artist and goes by the name of The Artist Ruse'l. We support each others artistic aspirations and our never ending search for inspiration that goes into each and every one of our creations. We curretly work from our shared 12000 square foot artist loft and gallery located in Winsted Connecticut at the Whiting Mills.
About my Style
I create with paint, a story, representing scenes from 17th-18th century history and nature. I've been creating different types of paintings for most of my life, but I like to create folk art style paintings the most. I love creating primitive folk art country landscape scenes that reflect simplistic designs & story telling qualities. I love to use bright colors to express feelings of warmth and happiness into each painting. I also love to create primitive portraits for people of their home and pets. I incorporate personal elements from photos that clients send me into each painting. This makes each painting a unique one of a kind heirloom.
My paintings feature hues of nature, warm and energizing, rich and exciting with strong mid-tone and deep bold colors. I am a self taught artist and have been creating works of art for more than 37 years. Throughout my years as an artist I have sold hundreds of paintings and prints from my studio, my web site Cheryl Bartley Designs "Folk Art for the Spirit" and at my eBay store Folk Art Spirit since 2001.
Most of my art is painted on paper, wood and canvas. I love to use primitive techniques that I have developed on my paintings as it adds and aged character to the finished painting. I love to paint country landscapes that reflect what I see around me living here in New England. I offer high quality giclee prints of my original work. I personally make each print to ensure quality. Each print is signed, numbered and dated with the year by me. I only offer 50 or 100 prints of an original painting and after that I do not make anymore, so qualities of my folk art prints are limited.
You can also find my prints and my paintings in many homes, business and shops worldwide. In addition to paintings and prints I offer greeting cards. I personally make each greeting card giclee print that I mount on the front of the card and then I sign and date each one making each card a mini work of art in itself. I
I also offer folk art painting lessons for adults and children at my studio and have hosted my own painting show on local public access Charter television channel 13 in Winsted Connecticut called "Folk Art Painter".
