The Limners—early 1700’s Eary American Folk Art Portriat Painters
1700 American portrait painters artist were called Limners. They were self taught craftsmen skilled in painting decorations on houses, signs, furniture. They lacked understanding of the basics of the fundamentals of art such as mixing colors, perspective, anatomical drawing and shading techniques. Thus their paintings usually looked very flat and lifeless but they did capture the way people used to dress and also the things that they cared about such as a person’s personal possessions or items that were used for an occupation or hobby. The word limning means drawing or making pictures with lines. The Artist was more like a traveling salesmen and spent most of their time traveling from one settlement to the next to find work. Most customers were acquired by word of mouth or by going door to door like a peddler. I also offer dog portraits and people with pet portraits and house portraits. Belwo are some examples of these types of primitive portraits. Images copied from eBay: 7819_1_338_2.JPG
